What is GreenSmart Construction?
The NSW Covernment's Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) has now
been implemented across NSW for all new residential building work involving
the construction of houses, duplexes, townhouses and units. lt also
now applies to proposed home alterations and additions worth more than
$1oo,ooo, and new swimming pools larger than 40,ooo litres As a consequence,
energy efficient design and construction is now an integral consideration
for all home builders.
GreenSmart is a voluntary practical approach to building that focuses
on educating builders, designers, product manufacturers and consumers
about the benefits of environmentally responsible housing. It is an
industry-driven initiative that aims to encourage a mainstream application
of its principles to today’s housing. As a voluntary initiative,
it provides appropriate market recognition for environmental endeavours
in the residential construction industry.

2006 HIA CSR NSW Housing Awards in the category of Greensmart Energy Efficient
was won by DM Carr Constructions.
Judges said the winning entry, at Lindfield, was quality housing with
an excellent overall master plan taking on board all the principles
of energy efficiency design. “The above-ground retention system
is just one of the many GreenSmart principles that have been used to
create this fantastic energy efficiency development,” they said.
Congratulating DM Carr Constructions on its success, HIA’s NSW
Executive Director, Graham Wolfe, said the awards represent the pinnacle
for excellence in the state.
“They recognise the achievements, both of companies and individuals,
who lead the way in the design, construction, innovation and technology
of housing...
The number and quality of these awards are a strong statement of the
determination of our members in NSW to deliver quality housing that
will stand the test of time. This is not easy to do in a difficult commercial
environment, but the evidence tonight shows they have risen to the challenge”
he said.
